在1989年初秋的柏林，威廉·鲍威列特的家人正在为他庆祝90岁生日。威廉曾是一名抵抗战士，去过国外的他坚信斯大林主义。尽管外面的世界已然山雨欲来，但他的妻子夏洛特仍在操持着生日聚会，维护家中的宁静。然而威廉的小孙子萨沙却在这个节骨眼上失踪了，没人能想到萨沙竟然在几天前逃到了西柏林。。Seeking shelter from a pounding rainstorm in a remote region of Wales, several travellers are admitted to a gloomy, foreboding mansion belonging to the extremely strange Femm family.
